Statis pointers via debugging...

Are there any tutorials or anything on finding static tutorials via debugging? I saw in another post someone say finding the static pointer by reversing the memory address until you get to a static pointer is slow (which it is) and dumb. However, I'm clueless as to how to begin finding a static pointer via debugging.
