So far, the Mayan Calender is the most precise and accurate calender ever created, and it is still far superior to our own. The Mayan calender has predicted meteorological and space events for thousands of years even after they were wiped out, it has yet to be wrong.

Mysteriously, the calender stopped on December 21th, 2012. The Winter Solstice. On further examination of this date, several EXTREMELY rare events in space will take place that could be extremely catastrophic to our planet and several others in the Milky Way.

Probably a majority of the people who have posted in this thread have not done their research on the subject, whatever they have posted is mainly opinion. I suggest watching Discovery Channel's Mayan Doomsday show. It can be found on Youtube in 4 segments.

I try not to predict the end of the world because even if I'm right I can't take any credit for it.

I think I read a while back that the magnetic poles will be switching around then, which only occurs every several hundred thousand years so we aren't very sure what to expect from that. Some people speculate that Earth will lose the magnetic field that protects it while the poles shift, which would cause some very, very bad things to happen (I can't remember specifics). Others speculate that it would be a gradual transition and that the poles would move slowly and our magnetic field would never be compromised. The worst that would happen in the latter situation would be that compasses and some other devices would be useless for a couple of years.

Most of the things that I've read about with regards to 2012 don't even come from the Mayans themselves, but from what other people (Late 1960's to present day) conceived from what the Mayans did. The Mayans never made a prediction that the world would end on December 21/23, 2012, let alone predicting it at all. The Mayan Long-Count Calendar simply ended on that date (Just as my calendar ends on December 31, except their calendar was a LOT longer). Many of the predictions about 2012 came from much more modern people, many of which claimed that the Mayans predicted X or Y which in turn is proven false. I read one about how the Mayans predicted that two birds would fly into the north on 9/11/01 (Converted from Long-Count), which turned out to be completely false since there is no evidence of this ever having been predicted.

One of the things that I find the most peculiar and potentially exciting was what a scientist speculated may happen when the magnetic poles shifted (or one of the other crazy things that is could happen around that day/year). I can't recall the exact description of it, but in a nutshell everbody on Earth would see anything and everything possible during the poles' transition period. We would see shapes that don't exist, colors that don't exist, and everything else that we can not imagine. Personally I think it doesn't sound like it would actually occur but imagining the entire world having an intense trip at the exact same time brings a strange smile to my face.

Anyways, hopefully I'll still be here to witness the date because I truly am excited to see if something does happen or not. Whether it is the end of the world, a global change of consciousness, or a dud, it will be a hell of a ride.

I've heard many people claiming that they said there would be some major event that occurs, being either a physical or a mental event. However, I do believe that I have also read (from multiple sources) that all of these claims are unfounded and none of them originated from the Mayan civilizations.

If anyone has some credible information that proves this wrong then I would love to read about it.

There were many accurate prophecies about the doomsdays, just the fact that the mayan calender ends on the day that several others predicted the world would end is significant evidence that the mayans knew what they were doing. It is very possible that the mayans had some kind of prophecy written down, or maybe not(it could have been something they passed on as a story, who knows?) that was eliminated by time. Remember, the mayans were wiped out thousands of years ago.
