Pure frustration over MS Word and Decryptum

Postby FireStarter » Sat May 17, 2008 11:42 pm

Will someone please explain to me how Decryptum.com is able to take a MS Word file that requires a password to get into it and open it up in 3 minutes? How do they do it?

Please don't post questions in the knowledge base.

To answer your question, they bruteforce them or they use flaws in the encryption algorithm of MS's encryption.

err...this has got nothing to do with MHS or game hacking but anyway, MS Office Suite has 1 of the weakest protection method in the market. Like mezzo said, they can either use brute force or exploit protection flaws. There are heaps of readily commercial available apps that do this. If these apps can't reveal the passwords, most of them give you the options of insert a new password of your choice. 3 mins seems long and I have 1 app that does this in less than 1 min. Bottomline is if you want to protect the content of word doc to prevent changes by users, best way is to pdf it before distribution.

Possibilities:
Brute-force password cracking
Rainbow tables
Weakness in their program to store passwords
