every PC in the building should be able to access the firewall.. unless it's a completely different subnet that is not attached to the main lan.

so to be able to sniff or portscan, you don't need physical access to the network room. any pc will do.

You will see a small window telling you how long does it takes the site to reply. This means ICMP is not blocked like what mezzo said. Try a few URLs and if you get request time out blah blah...it means ICMP is blocked.

wasn't i clear enough? I couldn't use cmd! the run options and .bat/.cmd (batch files) files are blocked!

Sorry Colin, misunderstood joo.
In this case, you may have 2 options:

1. Download a ping app that runs on Windows eg NeoTrace which I sometimes use. Google and you can find heaps of these around. Dont worry about it if they are trials 'cos you only need to test it once.

2. Login as administrator but if you do not know the password, you may need to crack it.

No not keylogger. Depending on what OS your school's computers are using, there are different admin tools available. I am actually quite reluctant to share with you what I use because I don't want to get you suspended from school or worst expulsion.

As for sniffing and port scanning, it is best you have a basic understanding of the TCP/IP stack. Read the following as a start,

lol... i've found out how to go to C:// (system) drive, but i wasn't able to change anything there! just when i though i've done it!

and um... its Win XP SP2 with core DUO or Win 2000

win 2000 would be easier to hack it think, but i'm not familiar with it.
