MHS has become popular enough that its downloads exceed 4 gigabytes per month which is why the site has been down a lot lately. The host already moved us to a new server which is why we were down the first time but it still was not enough.

From now on the help will no longer be included in the package download.
If MHS continues becoming too popular the host will kick us off and I will need to seek alternative solutions. I may need to do this anyway to avoid a surprise downtime in the near future.

With great power comes great responsibility”.

Just quote it from the first Spiderman movie.
Dunno if that fits the case... (- bad English -)

Wow, thats good news, but bad hosting wise... What to do....? :?

Have you considered linking the downloads from places like "Megaupload" or "RapidShare" L.SPiro?

MegaUpload is kinda shady >.> But that's a good idea, dunno how it works though.

some things you can do:

- don't underestimate bot traffic.. it may not seem much, but believe me, it is. Installing anti-bot question mod for phpBB will fix this.

- Don't post the download links on the mainsite; put them in the forum.

- Don't allow the helpfile to be downloaded directly (ie the unzipped one).
zip it and also put that link in the forum. I pleed guilty to this one, when
I'm at work, I just pickup a new version of the chm file directly..
(that's a 2.2Mb download each time.. zipped it is much less)

- Don't host the download on the same server as the forum..
Forum should simply be a pointer to the file.. 'cheaper' storage can be used for the distribution of the zip

- If you frown upon cheaper storage ie rapidshare etc (I do, because I feel it is unsafe),
you could use the imap/pop interface to gmail to send the zip through to all registered users..
(from your gmail account to all registered users.. you only need to send once, gmail does the rest).
gmail doesn't care about storage and I doubt they have a max amount of MB/Gig you can send.
This will also allow you to keep track of how many people actually use mhs.
You will need to look into the anti bot mod, or you will be sending loads of mhs.zip's to fake bot accounts.

if you need help with any of the above, don't hesitate to ask.

i hope something is done soon, this site is so slow now. it used to pop right up and never a problem but lately it takes like up to 6 seconds to load a page, when before it was done instantly. maybe if more of us actually DONATED some money (including myself), we can get on a better host or whatever is needed. right now its on the track to become super annoying like GZN and its "maybe u get in, maybe u dont" access. i can almost state the exact time this site started lagging, about the same time the first post was made on MPGH about MHS. within hours that post was copied and pasted to 4 more large hacking forums. our sweet little secret is out.

You you upload the MHS file zipped onto MEDIAFIRE. It's free. That way the server is maintained just for forum and website. That shoudl keep bandwidth down.

MPCForum now hosts the main download.
We will see how this impacts the performance of the server/site.
